Prof. Yunus urges Bangladesh people to raise voice for democracy, human rights


Yunus Centre : Nobel peace laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus in a statement urged the people of Bangladesh to speak out against injustice and in favour of democracy and human rights.
The statement was published by the Yunus Centre.In the statement he also described a labour court’s verdict against him as ‘contrary to all legal precedent and logic’.
‘As my lawyers have convincingly argued in court, this verdict against me is contrary to all legal precedent and logic,’ the statement read.
The 83-year-old Yunus, who is credited with lifting millions out of poverty with his pioneering microfinance bank, in the statement also pledged to serve the countrymen and keep continuing the social business movement to the best of his ability.
After coming out of court following the verdict on Monday, Professor Yunus told media that ‘I have been punished for a crime that I haven’t committed. If you want to call it justice, you can.’
Professor Yunus and three other Grameen Telecom officials were convicted of labour law violation and sentenced to simple imprisonment for six months in a case decried by different quarters as politically motivated.
The Dhaka Labour Court 3 also fined Yunus, the chairman of Grameen Telecom, a social business firm founded by the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, its former managing director Ashraful Hasan, and directors Nur Jahan Begum and Mohammad Shahjahan Tk 30,000 each.
